Toxins and Parenting

Deuteronomy 6:5-7 – You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

What is our job as parents?

It is our job as parents to intentionally and faithfully raise our children in a way that points them to God, the One in whose image they are made. In our home, we have joined the masses who want to provide our children with nutritional food free from additives and chemicals. We have changed out our cleaning products and laundry detergents to safer, ‘less toxic” choices. I would not consider us crunchy – just want the best for our family. We want our children to have as few toxins in their lives as possible. Toxins slowly build up and have life changing consequences. Why wouldn’t we want to protect our children from them?

Toxins in Your Family

This quest produced another train of thought in our home. Trying to have a less toxic environment takes on many shapes. If we are diligent and dedicated to get rid of toxins our bodies ingest, what other toxins are in the lives of our children? What toxins are in our lives that are not ingested through our mouth or skin? What toxins are poured into the hearts, minds and souls of our children? And how do we fulfill our role as parents in the most fundamental and important task we are given – providing an environment where our children can most glorify God? When all is said and done, our sole and greatest purpose is to provide an environment where our children can see the glory of a God.

What should we do?

Over the next few weeks, we will examine together toxins that invade the lives of our children. We will look at what they are, where they come from and how we can combat them and their effects.
